The people you need, need you! There are thousands of workers in this region who can not afford to live where they work. They include our firefighters, police officers, teachers and health care providers. They provide their skill and talent but far too often are priced out nearby homes. As members of the Washington Area Housing Partnership, we feel the affordable housing crisis is one of the most important regional issues we face. We feel even more strongly that community support for affordable housing is an important step to alleviate the crisis. The Washington Area Housing Partnership has embarked upon a affordable housing campaign to spread regional awareness about this crisis that is affecting thousands. The workshops are part of the Partnership's outreach initiative following the Toolkit publication. The affordable housing workshops will be an opportunity for local governments to learn more about innovative tools of interest to them as they work towards addressing one of the top priorities of residents in the metropolitan Washington region. The Partnership is working with local elected officials, housing directors, planning directors and community groups to set up affordable housing workshops. The Partnership also helps to organize the content of each workshop to best meet the needs of each local jurisdiction where the workshop will be held. The workshop format is tailored by working with elected officials and public agencies to determine the most appropriate focus for the jurisdiction. The workshops are typically being held during city or county board work sessions and are conducted in a presentation format highlighting one or two affordable housing tools, followed by an open discussion where participants can share their concerns and expectations regarding the “tool” presented. Participants during workshops will include the Partnership Board Chair, Barbara Favola and housing specialists or technical experts presenting on the specific affordable housing best practices.
